For better gas mileage ...
- Don’t be an aggressive driver – Aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by as much as 33 percent on the highway and 5 percent on city streets.
- Avoid excessive idling – Sitting idle gets zero miles per gallon. Letting the vehicle warm up for one to two minutes is sufficient.
- Observe the speed limit – Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph. Each mph driven over 60 will result in an additional 10 cents per gallon. To maintain a constant speed on the highway, cruise control is recommended.
Replace air filters – A dirty air filter, clogged with dirt and dust, chokes off the engine's air and causes a rich fuel intake – all the gas isn't burned. The result is poor engine performance and lower gas mileage. A new filter can add one to three miles per gallon as well as increase your engine's power.
Tend to under-inflated tires – Improper tire pressure will cost you one to two miles per gallon. Visual inspection isn't good enough...you need a good air guage to check it. We'll check it for free at Allison's.
Replace worn spark plugs/plug wires – Worn, dirty spark plugs cause misfires in your engine, Misfires send unburned gasoline out your engine, resulting in decreased power and lower gas mileage. The wires that send electicity to the spark plug also wear and deteriorate, robbing your engine of performance and gas mileage. Spark plugs and plug wires need to be replaced regularly and with quality parts.
Gas caps – damaged or missing gas caps can be cause signficant amounts of expensive fuel to vaporize. It's very bad for your wallet as well as the air we breathe.
